H1N1 Flu Information

Owens Community College is continuously monitoring the flu conditions and has a comprehensive plan to handle any aspect of a flu outbreak. We are also working closely with the health departments of Wood County, Hancock County and Lucas County as well as following the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The College's plan continues to emphasize prevention, but in the event of a suspected case, we ask that you follow the steps listed below.

Steps to follow if H1N1 is Suspected

  • All students, faculty and staff are urged to call The Department of Public Safety if there is a suspected case of the virus at (567) 661-7575.
    • The symptoms of H1N1 are similar to the symptoms of regular flu. Symptoms include fever (over 100ºF), cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with H1N1.

  • Upon learning of any suspected case, the Department of Public Safety will initiate a review of all information to determine if there is indeed a confirmed case of the virus.

  • H1N1 confirmation - students, faculty, and staff will be notified through various communications methods, such as the Owens Alert Management system as to the confirmation and what steps to take if needed.

  • If you develop the H1N1 strain:
    • Stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them, or
    • Remain home until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications to prevent the spread of flu to others.

  • Precautions:
    • Avoid close contact with sick people.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Will The College Close Due to the H1N1 Flu?
    • The guidelines provided by the CDC currently do not suggest closing colleges due to this type of influenza. The current recommendation is to keep ill students and employees at home to prevent further spread.
    • Please work with your faculty member to make up assignments for classes missed due to influenza. The College does take into consideration that requirements will vary by class.

  • QUESTIONS? Contact the Department of Public Safety at (567) 661-7575.
